A great shot capturing not only the Bread Store but tripled layered with the reflections  the customers inside and the window dressing. The precise textures of basket, tile and glass enrich this social document.

Abbott was truly amazing striking away from an unhappy childhood, first to college to become a journalist then off to Paris on a one way ticket and working for Man Ray, learning from the Parisian social documenter Atget, creating her own portrait style and returning to a changed New York in the grip of The Depression. With and without funding she documented the changing buildings and atmosphere of New York and later, changing America. She lived through extraordinary times and rapid development, a true pioneer.

You may not know her name but you'll be familiar with the images she took of twentieth century giants like Peggy Guggenheim and James Joyce later developing into a scientific photographer, constantly learning and experiencing the cutting edge of progress. Born in 1898 she died in 1991.
